It's so quiet that when my friend entered the room and saw the system, he commented on how quiet it runs, and he wouldn't believe me when I told him that Prime 95 was running for the past hour at smallest FFTs (maximum heat generation). Putting all 12 cores of the Ryzen 9 3900X under full load does practically nothing to raise noise levels, even though the fans for the top radiator and intake enter duty. Idle, it isn’t audible over the noise floor of the room, unless you get very intimate with the case. Its a bit of a shame that we didn't achieve fully passive desktop use, but the Noctua NF-A12x25’s are totally inaudible at 750 RPM on a radiator anyway, especially when pointed away from the user.Īs you can see, the system is extremely quiet. Turning the side intake to always run kept the loop a hair under 30 degrees most of the time during normal desktop use. I also set the side intake to always spin, as I found that totally passive, the loop would still warm up to 30 degrees idle, making the system swing back and forth between passive and idle quite often. The first thing I noticed was that the Noctua fans ran much quieter on radiators than as a free intake at the bottom of the case, so I dropped the intake fans’ speed by 10 percent across the board, which seemed to match the radiator’s fans for noise levels. But he, just in case, you know?Īfter all that, a little more finetuning was required. At 30 ☌ they could start spinning, and by a fluid temperature of 50 ☌ I wanted them to run at full speed, though they should never need to reach this point. I then set all the fans to stop spinning when the fluid temperature is below 30 ☌, which meant I couldn’t connect any of the fans to the CPU fan header, as Asus doesn’t allow CPU fans to stop entirely.

Morphing this into "the number of joins is smaller so the performance is better" is just incorrect. The point of our post was to illustrate that a UNION query can simplify how your join your tables and allow you to write constituent queries that have better performance characteristics. This is not true and this belief that joins are slow leads people down the path that ends at "SQL just doesn't scale" and "let's build a complicated Redis-backed caching layer". I think someone new to SQL is likely to read your statement and think "okay joins are slow so I guess I should avoid joins". I can expand this schema to have a UNION query with two 10-table joins and it would still perform better than the 7 table query. The reason the UNION query is fast is because the query on either side effectively utilizes the indexes so that the database engine can limit the number of rows immediately, rather than filter them out after multiplying them all together. What's more important for performance of queries on larger data sets than the number of joins is that there are indexes and that the query is written in a way that can utilize indexes to avoid multiplicative slowdowns. The number of joins alone doesn't have much to do with the performance characteristics of any query. Between this and your other response, where you expound on the same point, I think you're being far too hand wavy about what causes performance issues. Haven't done many non-Dewey libraries, and hate the ones set up like bookstores where you don't have interleaved levels of sorting.Īuthor here. Seriously though, even if you throw me in an unfamiliar layout, I'll generally quickly refresh on general identifiers then do a quick jog through the Library to nail down the layout. I'll preferentially choose a library whose physical layout I'm familiar with over one I don't, but if you take that physical layout and switch around all the numbers, I'll find you, and beat you with the heaviest reference volume in the Library once I find it. Though I'll admit, I'm not sure what gives it the "stickyness" for me, the numbers, or the physical location. I've not encountered any other way of organizing information that seems intuitively mappable quite like it. Swear to God, might one day make a Dewey Decimal System-like search Engine. Given a relatively ordered cart of books to put back on shelves, and an arbitrary starting point in the library to begin restacking (imagine going to the bathroom and some student comes and moves your cart on you), once you've done it a few times, you can usually unconsciously navigate the entire data store.Ĭompare this to most Search Engines, Reddit, or most Internet forums, where you have people maliciously attacking your overall index structure in a constant conflict for top page rank, orconstantly shifting page numbers based on time elapsed since last reply/engagement sorts. I first grokked it's impact when I'd volunter to reshelve books in the library. Once a "good enough" structure is achieved, genearally someone can quickly find their way around. That's the neat thing about consistent search indexing that isn't being maliciously subverted or tweaked. Was about to say, either doc registry, or library catalog. If not, WITH expressions to make the two independent queries and then a final SELECT to merge them however you prefer would be reasonable (whether that’s a join flavor or UNION/INTERSECT/etc.), but the super explosion JOIN just doesn’t cross my mind. If anything, I think many folks would say “whatever, make the two requests in parallel and zip them together in the application”. Like other commenters, I’m surprised to see a multi part JOIN be the answer for “I want the results of Query A as well as the results of Query B”. The laser beam is not touching the material, this is why there is such a high level of precision. The whole procedure is directed by a computer, which indicates the path that the laser beam will follow to cut the material. The high-power laser is projected in a small area of material, resulting in the heating of the material, melting and vaporizing it. When a machine engraves and cuts with a laser, it uses the technique based on thermal material removal. The Dremel DigiLabs is slated to come out next year, with an expected price of between $5,000 and $6,000.Laser cutting is a digital subtractive fabrication technology that uses a laser to cut materials. While it’s not explicitly mentioned anywhere, the laser cutter appears to be a slightly modified version of FSL’s Muse laser cutter, as they have the same size, build area, and general feature set. So, yeah, this thing will take up serious space. Since laser cutters will need a way to both cool down and get rid of the fumes, the device will come with an exhaust filter from Bofa as well as a separate cooling system that looks large enough to be a 3D printer. Do note, the hardest material it can engrave is glass and anodized metal, with the engraving only going as deep as the anodized layer rather than the actual metal underneath. It can cleanly cut through wood up to 0.4 inches thick, as well as acrylic boards up to half an inch in thickness, so there are plenty of projects you’ll likely be able to use this in. The Dremel DigiLabs uses a 40-watt laser, so this should slice through a whole lot of objects like a heated knife to butter. It can even take pictures of hand-drawn illustrations, which you can convert using the integrated software. Additionally, there’s a USB slot for printing saved designs on external drives as well as a built-in camera that you can use to take pictures of any designs for importing and converting into a compatible model. There’s no special software necessary, too, since you can access the laser cutter’s software locally from a web browser. Of course, it also comes with both Wi-Fi and an Ethernet slot, so you can access it from a PC for uploading new designs. Need to engrave something larger than that? Not a problem, as it comes with a removable floor that you can use to engrave a design on your bedroom door, your leather jacket, or the large wooden board you plan to use as signage for your new shop.Ī small touchscreen at the top of the printer allows you to choose what cuts to make or designs to engrave, allowing you to use it as a standalone machine. Because of the large dimensions, it has a fairly decent-sized work area measuring 20 x 12 inches, so you can fit sizable objects in there whether for cutting or engraving. The Dremel DigiLab comes in a form factor similar to an old-school flatbed scanner, so it’s literally a wide and thick box. Simply put, this will probably need its own table, especially if you plan to use it with additional accessories that people typically use with laser cutters. Unlike many desktop systems that attempt to minimize footprint, this one just embraces its size unapologetically, taking a gobload of desk space. Apparently, they have even larger aspirations in the fabrication space as the outfit has introduced a new desktop contraption: the Dremel DigiLab.Ī laser cutter, the digital fabrication tool can slice through wood, acrylic, and leather, all while performing engraving duties on tougher materials like glass and metal. We were surprised to learn a short while back that Dremel, who’s quite well known for their hand tools and rotary tools, has actually been making a 3D printer. I then have to go in to the Trash to select all the colored, “unread” spam and delete. The rest of the emails in the ‘SpamSieve’ folder change to whatever color relates to their degree of spaminess (which is fine). When I “Apply Rules”, the spammiest emails go to the Trash marked as unread but now colored blue or gray. These emails show up as unread and uncolored. These are obviously messages that SpamSieve is catching. I also have to manually “Apply Rules” to spam messages that show up in my ‘SpamSieve’ folder. When I “Apply Rules” they go to the Trash marked as unread but now colored. I believe these are server side messages that bypass SpamSieve because they’re not going to the SpamSieve folder. Ĭurrently, I have to manually “Apply Rules” to spam messages that show up in my ‘Spam’ folder locally. I have 4 scripts set up in this order: Server Junk Mailbox SpamSieve, SpamSieve, SpamSieve, SpamSieve. Michael, first off thank you for your timely replies - your customer support is very much appreciated. As it is now, SpamSieve does a great job but I still have to go through a number of steps just to delete the stuff. In a nutshell, I would like all spam, whether filtered through the server as spam or caught by SpamSieve, to be recognized by Blue and Gray spaminess and automatically sent to the Trash for instant removal. To have them treated like all the other spam and sent to the SpamSieve folder where they should consequently be treated by Spaminess and sent automatically to the Trash. What is your goal with respect to the spam messages caught by the server filter? This only happens if I select all the messages in the SpamSieve folder and choose ‘Apply Rules’. I’ve gone back through the rules and set up that Blue and Gray messages should go directly to the Trash. I understand that nothing is 100% but this is one way, though it would be a tedious way, of guaranteeing 100% of those specifically ruled messages were spam.Ī blocklisted message should go to the Spam mailbox and be assigned the most spammy color (blue). Despite the great job that SpamSieve does, with this feature I could guarantee that I never have to deal with those messages again in any way regardless of spaminess or any other factor. It would be nice to have an option such that I can dictate, for example, that "Every Message that contains ‘xyz’ in the Subject is immediately sent to the trash. There is no such thing as 100%, but there are ways you can separate out the most spammy messages and even make them go directly to the trash. I have gone through the FAQs, I just don’t think I’m grasping the best way to set things up so any help is greatly appreciated. I read about turning off spam filtering on the server but would that then open up the flood gates and pour loads more spam into my email? I understand that SpamSieve is designed to handle this, I just don’t know the best way to manage the software. I also get spam that shows up server side. I started blocklisting spam messages by Subject but for one, it didn’t seem to make a difference and for two, I read that I shouldn’t have to do that. How do I set things up so that messages that are 100% unquestionably spam go directly to the trash? I don’t mind reviewing a smaller list of maybes, I just don’t want to have to go through the hundreds I get throughout the day. SpamSieve has been great, capturing the vast majority and putting it in the ‘SpamSieve’ folder I created ‘On My Mac’ but I still have to go through it all to make sure a good message didn’t sneak in there and this is very frustrating and time consuming. I get an insane amount of spam every day. Seems like a deal if you only purchased it for one day or one person. The package is $10 per person, per day, which will give you unlimited games on certain machines with a green swipe. All the games are a la carte by swiping your room key but if you think your kids might spend a lot of time in the arcade, especially on bad weather days at sea, you may want to look at purchasing a package. If you have a teen that doesn’t mind joining a teen club, this might be a good way to try Laser Tag for free. Just keep in mind that on the Alaska cruise your session may still end up canceled due to bad weather. I would recommend scheduling these as soon as you board with guest services or through the online touch screens near the elevators because the sessions book up quickly, especially for days at sea. The Laser Tag is an elaborate maze offering 30-minute sessions, which must be reserved in advance. However, good luck getting the information in advance of your cruise because they are very reluctant to give out this information. Check with Norwegian for current pricing and policies as these may change. Added Costs on the Norwegian Bliss Cruise Ship However, the limitations of some of the “perks” like the unlimited drink package were definitely a surprise. We certainly didn’t expect everything, like the specialty dining, to be free. I didn’t include the obvious ones like spa or salon services and shore excursions, because I think most people are aware that those are additional. That is why I wanted to provide a list of add-on expenses on the Norwegian Bliss so that others can budget accordingly. So I figured I’m not the only one who would be surprised. When I posted about this on Instagram, I got a number of surprised comments about the non-all-inclusive nature of our experience. Still, all the add-on expenses made our Alaskan cruise deal not such a steal after all. So I’m not sure if this phenomenon is endemic to the cruise industry or to Norwegian in particular. And when Glenn and I took a Royal Caribbean cruise while we were dating, I don’t remember paying extra for mini golf or to use the rock climbing wall. I remember taking a Princess cruise with a friend in my twenties and we did a wine tasting for free. To continue to raise the bar on amenities, the Bliss has added more amenities and activities including laser tag, water slides, and even a go-kart race track. The Norwegian Bliss is part of Norwegian Cruise Lines’ Breakaway Class of ships, which sails to Alaska, the Caribbean, Mexico, the Pacific Coast, the Panama Canal, and more. It seems as if the cruise industry is going in the same direction, at least that was our experience on the Norwegian Bliss. The airlines have lowered their flight price, only to decouple fees for baggage, seat selection, entertainment, and food. The rule in the hospitality industry these days seems to be a decoupling pricing strategy. So my expectation going into our cruise was that it was going to be a fairly all-inclusive experience while on board. With those changes and upgrades, have come quite a few hidden (or at least unexpected for those that didn’t read the small print) costs.įor our Alaska cruise on the Norwegian Bliss, we selected the specialty dining package and the unlimited beverage package for two as our included “add-ons” to our package. The ships have gotten much larger and many offer so much more in terms of dining and on-board activities over the years. While we chose our Alaska cruise carrier because of the Norwegian Bliss cost, which was quite affordable for a family of three, we quickly discovered that some aspects of cruising have changed in recent decades. Back then, I remember ordering room service at will, grazing at midnight buffets, and indulging in whatever entertainment was offered on board. At least that is the way it used to be. Prior to sailing on the Norwegian Bliss cruise ship from Seattle to Alaska, it had been 20 years since my last cruise. We tend to think of cruise ships as all-inclusive resorts on the water.
